Tax ID (UK)

Tax ID (UK) Help Guide

Important Changes to UK Tax Regulations

There have been important changes introduced by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) that may affect your activities on our platform. HMRC has implemented new reporting requirements for digital platforms under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) rules. These regulations mandate that payment processing platforms, such as Stripe (if you’re using it to process payments on our platform), collect and report certain information about sellers to HMRC.

New Tax Regulations for 2024/25

As of the 2024/25 tax year, if you are processing payments through our platform, you will now be required to enter your Tax ID. To do this, simply go to Settings and follow the instructions to add your Tax ID. Additionally, you will need to enter your tax information on the payment processor you are using (such as Stripe).

What This Means for You
  • Income Reporting: Payment processors are now required to report your earnings to HMRC. If you’ve earned income through our platform using one of our payment processors, they will automatically report this to HMRC.
  • Tax Obligations: It’s important to ensure that you meet your tax obligations. If you are already registered with HMRC and report your income via Self Assessment, no further action is required. However, if you’ve not been reporting your income, this may lead to a tax liability.
  • Potential Penalties: Failure to report income or comply with tax obligations could result in penalties. It’s essential to address any outstanding tax matters to avoid any fines or legal issues.
Next Steps
  1. Review Your Income: Check your earnings through our platform and determine if you need to report them to HMRC.

  2. Register with HMRC: If you haven’t already, consider registering with HMRC for Self Assessment to report your income.

  3. Consult a Tax Professional: If you’re unsure about your tax obligations, we recommend seeking advice from a tax professional to ensure compliance.

Why Have UK Tax Regulations Changed?

The UK government now requires platforms that facilitate business transactions or generate income to collect tax IDs. This ensures that businesses or individuals are meeting their tax obligations properly.

Do You Have to Enter Your Tax ID?

We highly recommend entering your Tax ID to simplify your business and accounting processes. With the new regulations in place, payment processors are now obligated by law to report your income to HMRC. Entering your Tax ID will help ensure that you remain compliant with these regulations.

Important Points to Consider
  • You are still responsible for ensuring that your business complies with all relevant tax laws, including registering for VAT if applicable.
  • Even though payment processors like Stripe are reporting your income, you must still report your earnings and tax obligations on your business’s tax returns, just as you normally would.
  • If you operate in the UK or the EU, VAT is an important consideration for your tax filings.
